Today we reached a pivotal milestone as Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson joined theatre chiefs, funders, builders Gilbert Ash and architects Haworth Tompkins on site to celebrate the ‘Topping Out’ of the new Everyman, where the main structure is completed. This major capital project remains on schedule and on budget with the main structure of the building now completed.

A team from the Theatres entered BBC2’s Eggheads quiz to try to beat the ‘Eggheads’ and win money towards the Everyone for the Everyman appeal for the new Everyman Theatre and Talent Fund.

Slung Low - the company we worked with on both Everyman Unbound's Anthology and the Everyman closing ceremony, will return to Liverpool as they present The Knowledge Emporium. Located in Williamson Square, they are inviting the people of Liverpool to share something no-one else knows, with the aim of collating the wisdom of the city over the course of a week.

Casting has today been announced for The Ladykillers, which returns to the West End at the Vaudeville Theatre from 29 June. The new cast will include A Day in the Death of Joe Egg's Ralf Little, Simon Day (The Fast Show), Angela Thorne (To the Manor Born) and Olivier Award winning actors John Gordon Sinclair (She Loves Me and classic film Gregory’s Girl) and Liverpool's Con O’Neill (Dead Heavy Fanstastic & Blood Brothers). Chris McCalphy will reprise his role as One Round following the show’s recent UK tour.

In an extraordinary theatrical coup, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and Nottingham Playhouse will stage the European première of Matthew Spangler’s stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s international bestseller, The Kite Runner. Directed by Giles Croft, the cast features Ben Turner in the part of Amir and Farshid Rokey who will be appearing as Hassan. The production is at Liverpool Playhouse from Thurs 13 June to Sat 6 July.

This spring Stephen Unwin will direct a major revival of Peter Nichols’s A Day in the Death of Joe Egg at Liverpool Playhouse and Rose Theatre Kingston, with a cast led by accomplished comedy actor Ralf Little. This co-production premieres at the Liverpool Playhouse from Friday 5 to Saturday 27 April before opening at the Rose Theatre from Tuesday 30 April to Saturday 18 May.

All of us here at Liverpool Playhouse were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Richard Briers. Not only did he begin his career here (in 1956), he met and married his wife Annie while they were both members of the repertory company.

This week at the Playhouse we celebrated the anniversary of YEP – the Young Everyman Playhouse – our initiative to empower, nurture and enable young people to get more involved in theatre and what we do. YEP encompasses areas including writing, acting, marketing, production and programming, and was launched twelve months ago to great success.
