Art in the Everyman // Ali Barker, Artist in Residence
Two Theatres, One Vision
An exhibition by Ali Barker, Artist in Residence
13 - 23 Mar 2024
An exhibition of paintings responding to the contrasting architecture of The Everyman and The Playhouse, incorporating the artist’s experiences of being in the theatres during her residency (September 2023 - February 2024).
Ali Barker’s work expresses music and sound in colour. She works with a fixed palette to represent the colours she perceives through her experiences of the phenomenon of sound-colour synaesthesia – when listening to music, she perceives notes of the musical scale as specific colours. These personal experiences are the inspiration and motivation for Ali’s artistic practice. Starting from her perceptions whilst listening to specific pieces, or working from sound recordings she has analysed, her translational processes develop excerpts into colourful abstract paintings.
Ali is also inspired by architecture and skylines including complex cityscapes; however, she chooses to omit much of their detail and represent them as simplified forms. This is an area of her practice she has been expanding to include interior and exterior architecture of specific places, and to combine this with her experiences of being in those spaces.
