Staff picks // Allan Williams on The Tin Drum
Allan Williams is our Learning Associate. He works alongside our Engagement team to lead workshops with schools and universities, making sure that theatre is accessible for those in education...
Kneehigh tell stories with joie de vivre, a spirit of playfulness and mischief. Their shows are exciting, magical and they wholeheartedly allow fun its place in the theatre.
Having read The Tin Drum as a student I couldn't believe that anyone could reproduce it on the stage but that's just what they’ve achieved. The production blows you away, takes you on an amazing journey and attacks all your senses.
It’s the story of Oskar who from birth saw the failings of humanity and decided not to play ball. He literally refused to grow up and instead began banging his tin drum. The irony is that his so-called strange behaviour contrasts with that of his dysfunctional family and a society that willingly tumbles headlong into war.
Director Mike Shepherd brings together the finest ensemble to create a performance that does not compromise or accept anything less than brilliant. Kneehigh have that wonderfully rare capacity to entertain and inform without patronising the audience.
You will still be thinking and talking about this show for days afterwards… The Tin Drum is theatre as it should be: inventive, irreverent, meaningful but above all fun!
Join Allan for a post-show discussion with members of The Tin Drum creative team on Wednesday 11 October following the 5.30pm performance. The discussion, which will begin at approximately 8pm, is free to attend if you've watched this or any other performance during the run.
