A greener theatre
When we rebuilt the Everyman, sustainability was the word on everybody’s lips. The new building was a big investment in our future and the design team knew that sustainable choices would put us a step ahead in the green game.
There may be 40 shades of green but here’s 15 things you might not know about our award-winning environmentally friendly building:
- 25,000 bricks were recycled from the old Everyman
- The four chimneys on the roof are for natural ventilation
- A large tank collects rainwater, which is used to flush the toilets
- We use paper towels rather than hand dryers in the toilets
- We’ve got three beehives on the roof
- Also on the roof, you’ll find nesting boxes for swifts and bats
- The floor in the theatre is made from recycled rubber
- The floor back of house is made from a mix of recycled cork and rubber
- Where possible we use LED lights
- The bars, counters and table tops are made from Iroko, recycled from old lab bench tops
- Our heating comes from Air Source Heat Pumps that work like fridges in reverse
- Our hot water comes from a Combined Heat and Power unit which generates electricity with the waste heat
- The sliding doors re-use timber from the shuttering used to cast the board marked concrete
- All of the timber carries Forest Stewardship Council certification or equivalent
- We received an ‘Excellent’ rating as part of the internationally recognised Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM)
