Top Girls // Liverpool Black Sisters
02 February 2023
This week saw the start of rehearsals for Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse's production of Caryl Churchill's Top Girls. The play, celebrating its 40th anniversary, has been reimagined for Liverpool, with the main character Marlene (played by Tala Gouveia), returning home to L8 from 'the big smoke' of London to visit her sister Joyce (played by Alicya Eyo).
We were delighted to welcome some of Liverpool's influential Black Sisters, Michelle Charters, Bea Freeman, Claire Dove and Linda Loy, to meet some of our staff, cast and creative team. It was an invaluable insight for us all to hear from these incredible women, as they generously shared stories of their activism, communities, music, and most importantly, the real history of L8 in the 1980s.
You can read more about the pioneering Liverpool's Black Sisters on the National Museums Liverpool website here.
Top Girls opens at the Everyman Fri 3 Mar, and runs to Sat 25 Mar 2023. Click here for more information about the show.
