Art in the Everyman // Vlad Samoilik
27 Mar – 17 Apr
An exhibition by Vlad Samoilik
Vlad Samoilik is a Belarusian-born artist that fled the country when he was 18. Growing up in a totalitarian post-Soviet dictatorship, following the rules was always something that he rejected and you can see that rejection of the status quo in his works. There is no specific technique or style, rather art led only by emotions. There is rarely an idea or plan when he starts a piece, he simply start the process and the painting reveals itself to him. Many of the paintings have up to 5 layers of other paintings underneath, often mixing media to create unique textural qualities to the work.
The aim of the exhibition is to focus on simple, yet very important, things: emotions and colours. Whilst it’s very important for there to be a space in art for it to be political and reflect today’s society, we want the visitors to be able to look at something colourful and not necessarily overthink. These paintings are emotions on canvas - it’s not a statement.
