The Morris

Fri 6 May to Sat 28 May 2005

Some people think Morris Dancing is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

A sunny day in Prestatyn. Behind the scenes of the end of season Championship tensions are running high and nerves are jangling as Our Lady’s All Angels Morris Dancing Troupe prepare to fluff their shakers, perfect their routine and defend their crown.

Margy runs the troupe with ambitious military precision while Lily makes up her best routines in beer tents. The rest of the girls dance through life’s trials and add to the gossip and banter. As the afternoon wears on it’s more than the girls’ routine that’s put to the test as they prepare for the contest of their lives…

The Morris is a hilarious and powerful play about friendship, motherhood and pom poms and features an all Liverpool cast including Tina Malone and Sarah White who are known to many people in the country for their roles as Mo and Bev in Brookside. They are joined by three young and exciting actresses: Leanne Best, who made her professional debut on the Playhouse stage in 2003 in Popcorn, Kay Lyon and Laura Dos Santos.

Helen Blakeman is a nationally-acclaimed writer who was born in Liverpool. After winning the prestigious Pearson Theatre and George Devine Awards in 1997 for her first play, Caravan, she has gone on to become one of the country’s most exciting new writers. She was behind the drama series Confetti and Eyes Down for BBC Television and wrote the critically-acclaimed and BAFTA nominated Pleasureland for Channel 4.

Indhu Rubasingham returns to direct The Morris at the Everyman following her nationally-lauded production of Yellowman at the Everyman last year.
