5 minutes with Emily Hughes
What are the 3 things you love most in life?
My family.
Watching Gilmore Girls with my dog on my lap.
Getting out of the city for a weekend of camp fires and big walks.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I settled on lolly-pop lady after abandoning the dream of working in a bank when my mum told me I had to be good at maths; but then of course realised that was a pipe-dream, so decided I wanted to be an actress.
What is your earliest memory?
I remember being stood just able to look out of the front window of our house, cleaning the windowsill with cotton wool and waiting for my Dad to come home from work.
What makes you happy?
Seeing the people (and dog) I love happy.
What makes you angry?
When things are unjust.
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
So many. Probably eating the crispy bits out of the pan after I’ve cooked.
Which play changed your life?
Simon Stone’s production of Yerma this year left me reeling for days.
What’s exciting you about joining The Company?
Oh my goodness. Working on four amazing plays all of which speak volumes about the world we’re living in; working with a magical team whose eyes are fixed on making a real impact in the Liverpool community; and of course, working in my favourite city in the world.
What are you looking forward to doing when you’re (back) in Liverpool next year?
Having conversations on public transport.
What was your first experience of the Everyman?
A school trip to the infamous Everyman panto back in 2007.
If you could invite anyone (dead or alive) for a drink in the bar who would it be and why?
I would love to have all of my grandparents back with me for a toast to my first professional job!
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned as an actor or the best advice received?
I’m still drinking in all the good advice I’ve been given so far; but I would probably say that keeping your life filled with the things and people you love has been the piece of advice that has helped the most in the post-drama school uncertainty – remembering who you are and what makes you you, has helped me keep perspective and probably do my best work!
