5 minutes with Laura Dos Santos
What are the 3 things you love most in life?
My family, my bed & spicy food.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A vet, a policewoman, a soldier, a cartoonist, and ultimately an actress (then I could play any of those things!)
What is your earliest memory?
Trying to do a runner from my first day at nursery by pretending to need the loo and then legging it!
What makes you happy?
Pictures of dogs in costumes.
What makes you angry?
Rudeness, unfairness, long-windedness.
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
My electric blanket.
Which play changed your life?
The Crucible – I saw it for the first time when I was doing my work experience at Belfast Lyric Theatre and it blew me away. It confirmed that I definitely wanted to do this acting malarkey for a living.
What’s exciting you about joining The Company?
6 months (hard) work, 5 brilliant plays, 4 cracking parts, no free time, 2 star-crossed lovers, and a partridge in a pear tree!
What are you looking forward to doing when you’re (back) in Liverpool next year?
Exploring – it’s changed a lot since I last lived here.
What was your first experience of the Everyman?
A school trip to the panto.
If you could invite anyone (dead or alive) for a drink in the bar who would it be and why?
The cast of Dawson’s Creek (circa 1998), in character! I was obsessed with the show; I wanted to be cast as Joey Potter’s long lost English cousin in it!
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned as an actor or the best advice received?
When I worked with Tim Piggott Smith he said that we each have two pots, a talent one and a business one. It’s no good having an overflowing talent pot and an empty business one. He said it was important to try and put something in the business pot every week. I’m not particularly good with self-promotion, networking and that sort of thing so I have to remind myself of this advice fairly regularly.
