Learn more about the art of musical theatre in this three hour practical session for teachers including practical exercises you can take back to the classroom to inspire and empower your students to make high quality musical theatre themselves.

The workshop will be led by Nick Phillips and Sally Rapier as Musical Theatre Lab UK, who offer both scholarship and practice through workshops, production services and educational consultancy with a simple motto: “in pursuit of excellence in musical theatre performance.”

Dr Nick Phillips is a leading scholar in musical theatre in the UK . He is a Senior Lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University (our principal partner), currently developing an MA in Musical Theatre for introduction in 2017.  He is formerly Head of Acting at both the Central School of Speech and Drama and LIPA.  He is an experienced actor, director and musical director as well as author/lyricist and composer of all kinds of music/theatre including eleven full musicals, a chamber opera and a full requiem mass for choir, soloists and orchestra. He is also a trustee for the National Student Drama Festival. Locally he continues to perform in cabaret, (Ecce Homo for Homotopia, Unity Theatre)  and has enjoyed collaborations with Life In Theatre Productions (The Last Five Years and Fabaret).

Sally Rapier is former Artistic Director of the Global Search For New Musicals (Cardiff Festival of Musical Theatre), and Associate Director at the King’s Head, as well as a professional director/choreographer (most recently Theatre By The Lake, Keswick;  the Mercury, Colchester).  She is also a leading educator in musical theatre, having worked at conservatoires both in the UK and internationally.  She is currently heading the musical theatre training at Rare Studios, Liverpool.  In addition, she is the current Beatrice Lillie Scholar at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama studying for her PhD in Musical Theatre, focusing on the working methods and processes between director and actor specific to the musical.
