2004 //

Our first in-house production of the season, The Entertainer (16 Jan-7 Feb), saw Corin Redgrave return to the stage where his parents met and fell in love. Gemma Bodinetz made her directing debut as Artistic Director with Calderon de la Barca’s Spanish Golden Age classic, The Mayor of Zalamea (13 Feb-6 Mar) at the Everyman and August Wilson’s highly acclaimed Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (28 May-19 Jun) at the Playhouse.

We were honoured to work in association with Oxford Stage Company to open the national tour of the 50th anniversary production of Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow directed by Kathy Burke (12-21 Feb). The season also boasted a rare Noël Coward Double Bill of one-act plays (19 Mar-10 Apr) and the European première of Dael Orlandersmith’s Pulitzer-nominated play, Yellowman (6 Apr-8 May) which transferred to London’s Hampstead Theatre.

Illustrating our commitment to the support and development of new works, we also presented the world première of Fly (18 Jun-10 Jul), the debut play from Liverpool-based writer Katie Douglas who first came to our attention through the Young Writers Programme before becoming a Writer on Attachment.

The Everyman celebrated its 40th Birthday (28 Sep) and the occasion was suitably marked with two more pieces of new Liverpool writing: Tony Green’s The Kindness of Strangers (24 Sep-16 Oct) and Laurence Wilson’s Urban Legend (29 Oct-20 Nov).

At the Playhouse, Sheila Hancock starred in the deliriously dark comedy The Anniversary (10 Sep-2 Oct) in a further nod to the Everyman’s special year. This was followed by By the Rivers (29-30 Oct), a spectacular community production – featuring a cast of over one hundred – written by Cheryl Martin as part of the Black History Month programme.

At Christmas, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto Dick Whittington (3 Dec-22 Jan) glittered at the Everyman while Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Odd Couple (10 Dec-15 Jan) brought something for the grown-ups to the Playhouse.
