dot-art and the Everyman are bringing together theatre and visual art by embedding practising local artists within the theatre’s spaces, animating public areas and creating a body of work for exhibition. 

Working on site at the Everyman for a minimum of half a day per week for 6 months, the artists will be introduced to all the people, spaces and activity within the theatre, with access to rehearsals and production areas behind the scenes. The residency will result in finished art works to be exhibited in the public areas of the Everyman.

Following a great response to a dot-art artist call-out at the start of 2022 for visual artists working in 2D and based within Liverpool City Region, there will be two residencies with two artists each.

Residency one begins in April through to August, with artists Alex Corina and Laleh Kamalian. Alex creates vibrant acrylic and pastel works capturing daily scenes, iconic sights and celebrating Liverpool’s cultural history, most notably his Mona Lennon. Laleh is a relative newcomer to life as an artist, first picking up a pencil at the age of 48 and since exploring the world of art through a variety of mediums and methods, mostly through a love of coloured pencil.

A second residency will commence in September 2022 for six months with artists Tommy Graham and Kirsten Todd. Tommy has been living and working as an artist in Liverpool for 20 years producing large and small scale commissions including live drawings on the glass balustrades of The Museum of Liverpool. With a brush in hand since childhood, Kirsten specialises in portraits and abstracts working mainly in acrylics to capture, vibrancy, energy, strength, balance and beauty within the people she paints.

By giving these artists the time, space and resources they need to create new work in such a stimulating, varied and animated environment, we are allowing them to develop their practice in creative new ways, producing work in direct response to the theatre and its inhabitants. I cannot wait to see the results!”

The collaboration continues with Art in the Ev, as dot-art will curate a rolling programme of local artists work in the new exhibition space on the first floor at the Everyman. Open to individuals and groups, exhibitions will last between 2 to 6 weeks, with art work on display available to buy through the street cafe.
