The Choir With No Name
Monday 16th May 2022
We're pleased to announce that our Headlong co-production Corrina, Corrina, which opens at the Everyman this week, will have some very special performances from The Choir With No Name after the evening performances on 27th May and 4th June.
The Choir With No Name are a charity who run choirs for people who are homeless and marginalised across the UK, and have been building joyful singing communities since 2008. They have choirs in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Brighton, Cardiff and Coventry. Founded on the premise that "singing makes you feel good; it distracts you from all the nonsense in life and helps you to build confidence, skills and genuine, long lasting friendships".
Karaoke is a theme that runs throughout Corrina, Corrina, as the characters find solace in singing and use the activity to escape and find joy as they wile away the long hours on the container ship. Quotes from the play's script include "It's all inside. Singing helps. It's therapeutic." and "Karaoke is all about your heart, not your voice."
Iskandar Sharazuddin, Headlong's Communities Associate, said of the partnership;
"Myself and Headlong were so thrilled when the Choir With No Name agreed to work with us. From the very first meeting with Ema and Mersey it was clear that their work is rooted in compassion and friendship. It’s pretty clear to me that in order for theatre companies to be artistically brave and exciting the bedrock of our collaborations has to be compassionate.
It has been a really beautiful journey of building a relationship with the choir which included taking the company of Corrina, Corrina to a choir rehearsal to sing and share a meal. We’re also pretty chuffed that this collaboration has meant that so many choir members will be able to perform at the Liverpool Everyman for the first time, which I know for a lot of the members is very exciting as the theatre is a cultural cornerstone of Liverpool."
Ema Quinn from The Choir With No Name said;
"Working with Headlong and the team at the Everyman Theatre has been a joy. The central themes of the play are very relevant to our choir members and we are really proud to be involved. Every step of the way we've been included, heard and welcomed into the process. We loved having the full company join us in our rehearsal and to share a meal with us, singing and eating together is the glue of our choir family! The care and effort put into developing a relationship with our choir has been a really important part of the process, a big part of our work is breaking down barriers, both of perceptions of homelessness but also of opportunities for those of us who all too easily become invisible, powerless and voiceless when life takes a tough turn. We're really excited for the performances and hope to develop the relationships with both Headlong and the Everyman in future years."
