We’re on a stamp!
The Everyman is one of 10 buildings to be included in a Special Stamp set launched by Royal Mail.
In a collection celebrating contemporary UK architecture, all of the buildings are landmarks for their local communities, regions and cities. It’s a real honour to see our Everyman celebrated in this way.
We’re in good company too. Flying the North West flag with us is the Imperial War Museum [Manchester]. Elsewhere the set includes SEC Armadillo [Glasgow], Scottish Parliament [Edinburgh], National Assembly for Wales [Cardiff], Giants’ Causeway Visitor Centre [Northern Ireland], Eden Project [St Austell], Aquatics Centre and Tate Modern [London] and the Library of Birmingham.
“These new stamps celebrate visionary buildings which combine stunning architecture with great engineering,” said Phillip Parker, Royal Mail’s Stamp Strategy Manager.
A Stamp Strategy Manager? Yes! For more than 50 years, Royal Mail’s Special Stamp programme has commemorated anniversaries and celebrated events relevant to UK heritage and life. The Queen approves all UK stamp designs before they are issued, too.
Gemma Bodinetz, our Artistic Director, said “Through the design and construction process our sights were firmly fixed on creating the perfect theatre for our audiences and artists; it never occurred to us that one day it would be winning major architectural awards let alone being licked and stuck on envelopes!”
Remember when we won the RIBA Stirling Prize?
Steve Tompkins, the director at Haworth Tompkins in charge of the new Everyman development project, said: “We set out to make a public building that the whole community could feel was part of their everyday lives… So to have the new Everyman immortalised on a stamp feels like a lovely endorsement of that ambition. I’m looking forward to tiny Everymans winging their way around the globe as ambassadors for this extraordinary theatre company.”
So are we Steve! How wonderful that tiny little Everymans – and the Liverpool people on the façade – will be soon travelling around world
The Special Stamp set is available from today at royalmail.com/landmarkbuildings and 7,000 Post Offices across the UK.
