09 Sep 2024
Two of our YEP members, Ellie (YEP Producer) and Scout (YEP Director) went to see Wonder Boy in Bristol, read all about their experience from Scout below!
"I recently had the chance to visit the Bristol Old Vic as a Young Ambassador with YEP. I got an exclusive look at their upcoming production, Wonder Boy, written by Ross Willis and directed by Sally Cookson. The play tells the story of Sonny, a 12-year-old boy with a stammer, and his struggle to be heard in a world where language holds significant power.
During our visit, we took a tour of the theatre and learned about the creative elements of the production. One highlight is the live creative captioning used throughout the play. This isn’t just a typical accessibility tool; it’s integrated into the performance in a way that interacts with the action on stage, adding an extra layer of creativity to the storytelling. Each speaking person has their own voice, which will also be portrayed in the captions, making them as engaging and unique as every character's personality.
After the tour, we had the chance to watch a special rehearsal session. The cast performed several scenes specifically for us, giving us a glimpse into how the play is shaping up. Hilson Agbangbe, who plays Sonny, delivered a powerful performance. His portrayal of Sonny, who deals with his speech impediment while navigating a vibrant inner world, was both moving and authentic. The scenes between Sonny and Captain Chatter, played by Ciaran O’Breen, were particularly striking. The chemistry between the characters highlights the emotional core of the play, underscoring the importance of their relationship in Sonny’s journey. The entire cast has been so lovely and helpful in answering our questions and giving us insight into their characters. I very much look forward to catching up when they arrive in Liverpool.
I found Wonder Boy truly captivating, especially due to the incorporation of British Sign Language (BSL) by the character Captain Chatter. The use of BSL noticeably added depth and emotion to the play, creating a truly dynamic and inclusive experience for the audience. Witnessing the actors' way of communicating gave me goosebumps and took me on an emotional journey in the best way.
Wonder Boy could redefine how we view communication by presenting British Sign Language (BSL) as more than a tool for the Deaf community. By incorporating BSL into the performance, the play shows how different communication methods can bridge gaps and foster deeper connections. This perspective encourages us to appreciate BSL as a rich language that unites diverse forms of expression and promotes inclusivity.
Meeting Ross Willis, the playwright, provided unique insight into the play’s creation. He described Wonder Boy as inspired by a creative project that felt like a “three-act panic attack,” reflecting the anxieties associated with communication and social norms quite common in our society. This backdrop helps us understand the depth and universality of Sonny’s story. I observed a balanced mix of humour and deeper emotional moments, capturing the play's ability to address serious themes in an engaging way. The amazing team allowed us to explore the struggles of communication and self-expression in a manner that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Wonder Boy resonates on many levels, particularly with young audiences. Its innovative use of live captioning, integration of BSL, and relatable themes make it a unique and impactful production.
Wonder Boy will be at the Liverpool Playhouse from Wed 25 Sep to Sat 28 Sep 2024. If you’re looking for a performance that blends creativity, humour, and emotional depth, this is a show you should not miss."
