Lighting up the Rec
Our Bass Techs programme has its origins in North Liverpool, which began in 2008 with an installation project. Working with a team (including a youth worker, an ex-offender and an artist) a group of young men identified as 'at risk' worked with us to animate a caged football area where they hung out, known locally as the Rec.
Repairing and re-using theatre lights, fairy lights and lamps belonging to local residents, the space was transformed, culminating in a celebratory football match. A film about the project helped secure temporary lighting on the site along with weekly professional football coaching.
This hugely popular community football event saw eight out of the 12 young men gain AQA accreditation in lighting, the same level as the casual crew we employ.
