Alexis Butterfield has worked in architecture for over 25 years and has a lifelong love of buildings and history. His work draws inspiration from the everyday historic buildings and places in his adopted city of Liverpool.

Another World explores visible contrasts within the city of Liverpool, and what they might represent. Liverpool’s leafy villas contrast with treeless, tightly packed streets. Alexis explores a lost world too, where we glimpse a past that is tangible and yet also unreachable, the face of buildings having lost their original meaning.

My artwork records my walks exploring the city. I normally keep away from tourist Liverpool, seeking out, valuing and enjoying the everyday past that surrounds us. I believe these historic places and buildings are not neutral objects. They’re often places of gathering and past pride, memories from the time of their creation onward that we still live with into the present day, even if our collective response is frequently neglect. This gives them layered, emotional (sometimes grieving, sometimes celebratory, sometimes defiant) qualities that I want to capture through my work

Alexis’ pieces have a foundation of line drawing with figurative abstraction, focussing on simplification, colour, and emotional expression. As much as an exploration of the city, they are also an exploration of the capacity of materials. Working fast and in series, layers of techniques and media are combined and collaged to give dramatic contrasts of tone, mark-making and mood.
As a growing body of work, they represent a personal, emotional, political and artistic response to sense of place as he explores the changing city.
