Leah and George are both actors as well Box Office Duty Managers, here they tell us their favourite things about working for our theatres, and what they are looking forward to in the upcoming season.
Explain a typical day in the life of a Box Office Duty Manager
George: A typical day involves interacting with audience members, supporting my team, and ensuring everything runs smoothly from the moment a customer books a ticket to the moment they arrive at the theatre. Our role goes beyond selling tickets: we shape the audience experience.
This includes guiding people through the ticketing process, preparing for performances, and making sure every visitor feels welcomed before and after the show.
Leah: Tasks vary a bit when there’s a show on, as we have to send over show info the front of house duty managers such as access bookers or group bookers, printing tickets and giving them out during the incoming, as well as standard office tasks such as reconciling payments, chasing group bookings, answering calls and emails. When we’re open to the public, we’ll be on the desk for counter bookings too.
What’s your favourite thing about working here?
Leah: I like being immersed in a creative environment and seeing how the theatre operates.
George: Working towards a common goal: creating memorable theatre experiences – it’s a journey that begins from Box Office! It’s amazing to see the excitement in people’s faces (or voices if it’s a phone booking!) for upcoming shows. Being part of that first step is incredibly rewarding.
Favourite show you’ve seen at our theatres?
George: Definitely Macbeth by imitating the dog. I loved how the classical text was interpreted and made accessible to new audiences using live cameras, strong visuals, and inventive storytelling.
Leah: I loved Metamorphosis back in 2007/8 before I worked here. It was by an Icelandic theatre company, and the physical theatre was incredible. Since working here, I would say I really enjoyed The Walrus Has a Right to Adventure and North by North West.
What do you love about your job?
George: I love being surrounded by artists and people from creative industries. This job allows me to view theatre from a different perspective, not just what happens on stage, but the entire process behind it. Theatre is a collective effort, and I feel grateful to be part of the team that supports the audience’s journey from start to finish.
Leah: I like the problem-solving aspect and getting a more in-depth understanding of our ticketing software Tessitura. The free theatre tickets are also a bonus!
What’s your favourite thing about the festive season?
Leah: I love seeing all the excited faces when people see the Christmas tree when they walk in, coercing their children in front for a photo opportunity. At home I love decorating my own tree with a Christmas cassette type playing that my mum has had since the 90s.
George: It has to be the famously gorgeous (and massive) Christmas tree at the Everyman Theatre. It really puts you straight into a festive mood.
What are you looking forward to in our upcoming season?
George: As a big Arthur Miller fan, I’m really looking forward to Death of a Salesman.
Leah: Prima Facie just because of how much of an event it will be, also The Constant Wife. From our in house produced shows I’m intrigued by The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher.
