One shot could change history.
Based on the incendiary short story by Hilary Mantel, The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher is darkly funny and dangerously tense – a gripping psychological thriller created for Liverpool, the Everyman and our politically violent times. Adapted for the stage by Alexandra Wood and directed by John Young, this daring world premiere is an unmissable event – an audacious game of power, class and conviction that asks the biggest ‘what if?’ of them all.
It’s late summer, 1983. Out in the street, the world is waiting to greet Margaret Thatcher as she emerges from hospital. Just routine surgery – what on earth could go wrong? But here in this room her life is up for deadly debate… and history is holding its breath.
Two people. One window. One gun.
If the time comes to pull the trigger, which side of history will you be on?

Theatre Bar Exhibition by Comics Youth CIC
Displayed until Sat 23 May
Comics Youth CIC work with marginalised young people aged 8-25, using comic and zine making to support mental health. They are based in Birkenhead, and have worked with young people across the Liverpool City Region and beyond over the last 10 years.
We are delighted to share the work of three of Comics Youths incredible young artists, in response to our production of The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher.
Rhys Vogwell – Margaret’s Bounty
Soph – agenderpunkarts – Too Bad!
Kaitlyn Lloyd – Thatcher’s Liverpool
The young people were given a brief to create a piece of art that speaks to the key themes of the play and reflects the impact Margaret Thatcher has left on Liverpool, through the eyes of our younger generation.

Step Inside: Liverpool’s Most Explosive Decade
Wednesday 22 April from 5.30pm – 6.30 pm. Downstairs in the Everyman Theatre – FREE – no need to book, just turn up.
In the early ’80s, Liverpool found itself at the centre of a national storm. Against a backdrop of social change and economic struggle, the Toxteth Riots erupted, sending shockwaves across the UK. What came next was even more shocking: the revelation of a government conversation about a potential policy of “managed decline” for the city. Stephen Kelly, a leading professor of modern Irish history and British/ Irish relations, takes us on a journey through the political drama and local tensions that shaped Liverpool in the 1980s, offering a fresh understanding of Liverpool’s spirit, resilience, and reputation for never backing down.

Step Inside: Hilary Mantel’s Darkly Playful World
Thursday 14 May from 5.30pm – 7 pm. Downstairs in the Everyman Theatre – FREE – no need to book, just turn up.
Led by Dr. Alex Coupe (University of Liverpool) and Dr. Lucy Arnold (University of Worcester), this conversation opens the door to Mantel’s writing for audiences. Alex and Lucy share short introductions to Mantel’s short story and her wider body of work, illuminating her wit, her politics, and the unforgettable characters and worlds she created.
The pair will be joined by New Works Associate, Tommo Fowler and YEP Trainee Assistant Director Laura Copeland. Together, they’ll explore how Mantel’s provocative storytelling translates from page to stage: What makes the story so resonant today. How do we adapt such a bold tale? And what new meanings emerge in the process? This will be followed by an open discussion.
